The Fight Against Suicide, Depression, and Anxiety. We spend our days interacting and having conversations with people, but not knowing what’s going on in the inside of them. We are often greeted with smiles and laughter by those closest to us, but do we know how they truly feel? The world has taught us that showing our emotion is a sign of weakness and that we should avoid it at all costs.

So how do we even begin to help someone we don’t even know is suffering? Suicide and its causes: Death is simply the act of one taking their own life, killing themselves. There are so many reasons as to why one would opt to kill themselves than rather face their problems. People who usually resolve to suicide have not been given the attention they needed when they were struggling. They typically have struggled with mental illness that was either not being treated or the treatment was not working.

The main cause of suicide is the absence of hope. A person that is struggling with suicidal thoughts feels as though they cannot cope with the challenges that they are facing and they have lost all hope that the situation that they are in will change. The minute you lose hope that there will be a brighter day is the minute that you begin to struggle with suicide ideation. If there is no intervention at this stage, a person might complete suicide.
Anxiety and Depression: Anxiety and depression are often coupled with one another as a presence of one will eventually lead to the other. When you are depressed, you are often thinking of all the challenges that you are facing and how you are not coping with them, which will lead to you worrying about whether you will ever be able to overcome your challenges or not. And just like that, you now have anxiety. People only seek help for depression when it begins to interrupt their daily lives. Most people that are diagnosed with depression have often gone to the doctor for another health issue, only to find that those are the effects of the recession. Depression is not just in mind, it can take over your physical body in so many different ways.
Treatment and Remedy For Suicide: In simple terms, there is no treatment for suicide, as the person is already gone. We have to look at ways of how we can prevent death and not just manage the after effects of it. The first step to preventing suicide is to recognize that you have depression or that your friend or a family member has low. Take notes of the changes in the lives of those around you. No one will approach you and say, Hi, please help me. I’m struggling with depression. Most people, who suffer from depression, suffer in silence, and they put on a mask when they are around people to give the illusion that they are ok and everything is fine. Their world could be crumbling around them, and you wouldn’t even know it.

Once you begin to see changes in someone’s life, such as them becoming more withdrawn and not going out as much, initiate a conversation. Check on them regularly; encourage them to seek professional help. Most importantly, listen to them and allow them to talk. Don’t make comments such ou are always sad, why do you always bring the mood down?’ or row up and stop being emotional.’ This is the kind of language that causes people to close up and suffer in silence. So when you have such a friend, please listen to them and give them a safe space where they can be true to themselves. If it is you struggling and you are reading this article, please reach out for help. I know it’s hard; I’ve been there. The process is not easy, but trust me, it’s worth it.
The best way for us to minimize the statistics on suicide is for us to be kinder to one another. For us to help each other and support each other through the challenges, we face. Even if you meet a stranger, smile because you never know what a person is truly going through. Instead of adding on the stress, be friendly and open with those around you so they know that they can come to you and not be judged. If we all just listened to each other, fewer people would struggle with depression and anxiety. So be your brother’s keeper, and look out for each other.
